Late Summer and Early Fall Colorado Landscaping Guidelines

Now is a Great Time to Optimize and Maintain Your Denver Home's Landscaping

It is hard to believe that it is already mid-August. While the school buses and back-to-school sales may have you envisioning autumn leaves and chilly nights, late summer and early fall is a great time to maintain and even optimize your Denver home’s landscaping.

TeamCox Realtors has a few recommendations to incorporate into your fall landscaping to-do list:

  • Extra Watering: We are in the middle of a heat wave so it is important to ensure that your plants and yard are receiving more than enough water before going into the long winter. It is crucial to water your yard’s more stressed areas more frequently right now.

  • Weeds: Fall is a great time to deal with weeds. Before applying a herbicide, the Colorado State Extension recommends increasing the strength of the turf that is accomplished through regular fertilization. Since fall is the most important time of year to fertilize, apply one pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of turf in September or early October. Continue the regular irrigation into the fall since the turf not only needs the water but drought-stressed weeds don’t respond well to herbicides. The Colorado State Extension recommends applying herbicides directly on the weeds versus spraying them all over the entire yard.

  • Planting: While spring is considered the optimal time to plant trees in Colorado, fall is also a great time to add some new trees to your yard. Make sure that they are planted by mid-October for best results. Many local nurseries have already begun to discount their inventories so there are many bargains. Also, don’t forget to plant your fall bulbs for beautiful spring blooming.

  • Watch the Thermometer: Make sure that Denver’s first frost doesn’t catch you off guard with your plants uncovered. It is also critical that your irrigation system is winterized (less formally known as a “Sprinkler Blowout”) before the really cold temperatures arrive in November. Skipping this inexpensive step could spell out a disaster if your pipes break.
