Happenings at the Denver International Airport (DIA)

DIA deals record passenger traffic as it plans for the future and deals with customer service woes

TeamCox Realtors constantly monitors the Denver transportation arena since it directly impacts Denver’s economy and real estate market.

There has been quite a bit going on at Denver International Airport (DIA) in recent months. While traffic at the airport is exploding, complaints continue to mount about its inefficiency and customer service following the Christmas blizzard debacle of 2006. The following tidbits about DIA are particularly interesting:

  • DIA has seen record numbers of passengers in recent months including over four million passengers during the month of May.

  • DIA is currently the fifth busiest airport in the country and the tenth busiest airport in the world.

  • DIA has plans to add a four-star hotel adjacent to the Jeppesen Terminal. A premium hotel certainly would have come in handy during the blizzard!

  • Denver’s 5280 Magazine recently named DIA as having the worst customer service in the entire city – ouch!

  • DIA prides itself on being an environmental leader since its Environmental Management System was recently re-certified. This certification resulted from DIA’s large fleet of hybrid vehicles, its state of the art recycling systems and a reduction in hazardous waste among other things.

  • Turner West, DIA’s Manager of Aviation, will retire in the spring of 2008. The search for his replacement has spawned a debate that DIA’s new Manager of Aviation needs to be compensated more competitively.
