Since this is arguably the largest scale event that Denver has ever hosted (other notable events include World Youth Day in 1993 and the Summit of the Eight in 1997), preparations for the convention are already in full swing.

Here are just a few interesting tidbits about 2008 DNC Convention:

• According to the 2008 Host Committee’s website, the convention is expected to pump $150-200 million into Denver’s economy. Understandably, companies specializing in everything from catering to audiovisual equipment are scrambling to get even a crumb of this revenue.

• Last week, the Democratic National Convention Committee opened its environmentally friendly Denver office at the Civic Center Plaza. Once it is fully staffed, there will be as many as 200 workers employed there.

• The Host Committee estimates that it will take at least 10,000 volunteers for the convention to run smoothly.

• This isn’t the first time that Denver has hosted the DNC. The Mile High City hosted the 1908 Democratic Convention, which is exactly one hundred years prior to next year’s convention.

• Many state representatives have already visited Denver to check out accommodations for their delegates. Those who haven’t made the trip better hurry since 19,000 Denver hotel rooms have already been reserved.

• Although private funding for the convention has been lagging a bit, John Hickenlooper, who has been scrambling all over the country to raise funds, has publicly declared that he isn’t worried about it. This is partly due to the fact that there are not as many Fortune 500 companies based in Denver as other host cities.
