Denver Set to Shine for the DNC
Much Preparation has Gone into Getting Ready for Denver’s Guests
Since the long awaited DNC starts on Monday, Denver’s time to shine has finally arrived. Although Denver is gleaming this weekend, getting ready for the DNC has not been a simple task. Denver has been “cleaning house” for months to prepare for the expected 50,000 out of town guests. Regardless of your political affiliation, you must appreciate the positive changes that the DNC preparations will bring to the entire Denver metro area. The effects will likely resonate will resonate long after the last guest departs.
City Park’s Ferril Lake Fountain: City’s Park’s newly reconstructed Prismatic Electric Fountain was unveiled to an excited crowd last week. The $3 million project is historically symbolic, since the fountain dates back to the 1908 Democratic Convention, which was also held in Denver. The computerized, state-of the art will put on a different show every half hour from mid-May through September.
16th Street Mall: Since the 16th Street Mall will likely be a popular spot during the convention, much effort has gone into getting it ready. You can’t miss all of the flowers that have been planted. The Downtown Denver Business Improvement District (BID) invested a whopping $140,000 in 105 flower planters this summer. The 16th Street Mall has also gone “green” for the DNC. The 16th Street Mall Recycling initiative as spawned 10 new recycling bins placed all along the mall.
Art: Denver is making an effort to showcase its growing artistic identity. There will be numerous gallery shows and interesting art on display, including the statue of a yearling pony outside the public library.
This is by all means not an all-inclusive list of everything that Denver has done to prepare for the DNC. It may be worth venturing downtown to watch our great city sparkle in the national spotlight.
